Paper Title: Christ Who Sits at the Right Hand of the Father
Abstract:
I trace biblical references to Nicene Creed’s phrase, Christ who is “seated at the right hand of the Father.” I then focus on Christ’s heavenly role as a high priest performing sacrifice at the right hand of God in the eternal order of Melchizedek, as described in Hebrews. Relying on David M. Moffitt’s Rethinking the Atonement, I argue that Christ’s heavenly sacrifice as depicted in Hebrews is the Levitical sacrifice, where slaughter is not the central part of the sacrifice. I discuss the Hebrew term to show that the essence of sacrifice is to bring the offerings to God. Sacrifice, in short, means the movement of offering. It presupposes the covenantal relationship. This is what Christ is doing after ascension, as He offers Himself on the heavenly altar as a sacrifice. I briefly discuss the vicarious sacrifice of the righteous to draw a contrast from the Levitical sacrifice. I also discuss the symbolism of the blood as a shield from the destruction of death, as in Passover and at Golgotha. I further contrast it with the manner in which the blood is used in the Levitical sacrifice. Lastly, I then draw some implications in relation to the Eucharist in the Orthodox Divine Liturgy.
